After controlling and possessing the majority of the first half, the Warrenton boys soccer team led at halftime on Thursday night against Pacific.
The Warriors were leading 2-0 at halftime, one of the most dangerous leads
to have in soccer. While a 2-0 game is considered to be an insecure lead, the Warriors escaped the stereotype of the “worst lead” to have and came out with their first win at home 3-2.
The defense held Pacific, especially in the last four minutes of the game, after the Indians had scored another goal to make it a one-goal margin.
“They had a lot of momentum coming in and we’re trying to survive and trying to make those passes,” Head Coach John Schulte said. “It was an exciting game, but it definitely wears on you.”
Schulte said he was proud of his team and noted the defense did a great job limiting Pacific’s two forwards up top.
“The kids did a fantastic job executing today,” Schulte said. “They were getting the ball where it needed to be and putting it in the net.”
It had been seven years since the two teams had last played each other with Warrenton losing all three games in the past, but Schulte noted the team was prepared coming into the game.
“We knew that they were going to be technical and be able to pass and move, so we were ready for it,” Schulte said. “We had a game plan about what we’re going to do and the kids stuck with it and got the win.”
Leading goal scorer for the Warriors, Isaac Wagner, put two goals in the net. Wagner scored the first goal late in the first half off a header from Hudson Kieffer’s corner kick. About eight minutes later, Wagner scored again after Gavin Thompson took a shot that bounced off Pacific’s defense oddly, which allowed Wagner to finish it.
In the second half, Evan Donovan scored for the Warriors and Wagner had the assist.
Mark Jaspering played 40 minutes in goal and recorded a shutout. Riley McGee came on for Jaspering after halftime and had six saves.
The Warriors are now 9-4 in the season and are on a four-game winning
streak. Warrenton will play next in the GAC Cup Oct. 8 through Oct. 10.
